Hello, I am Will Harper and I live and work in Cuenca Ecuador.
I am not a dance teacher (I am a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language), but I am considered by many to be an excellent dancer
AND, I have earned a few dozen "First-Place" awards in Virginia State, Winners Circle, and North-American dance competitions.
The Cuenca Ballroom Dance Club is located in a rented professional dance studio in the Totoracoha Area, near my school.
The
dance is held in a professional dance studio, in a nice neighborhood, on a well-lighted
street, with plenty of streetside parking, if you decide to drive. Or, every
taxi in town can take you there. Google maps is not accurate, but it will
place you in the area. Click this link for a map that has the exact location pinned on the map:
http://tinyurl.com/2af68ow
. As far as I know, streetside parking is safe - the Cuencans park
there - but, if you will be uncomfortable, take a taxi. Two bucks, and
leave the driving (and the parking) problems to the cabbie. For the return
trip, there is a taxi stand less than half-a-block away, and minute-by-minute
taxies streaming by on Yana Urco.
The Cuenca Ballroom Dance Club WILL BE open every Sunday at 7:00PM, with a free 30 minute dance lesson in the basics, of one dance each week
I have a
mix of dance music to please every dancer; ranging from traditional ballroom (Waltz,
Foxtrot, Quickstep,..) to Latins (Tango, Argentine Tango, Rumba, Samba, Cha Cha,
Salsa,..) East-Coast Swing and West-Coast Swing, Disco/hustle and more.
I'll have bottled water, drinks and a few snacks - If anybody cares to bring a
pot-luck snack for 5 or so, please do so.
The dance will start with a free basic dance lesson - 7:00-7:30 PM, with general
dancing until 9:45 to10:00 PM.
Admission is FREE (really), but I will solicit a $2 donation, to help pay
the rent, etc., if you wish to help out.
We will dance at the Dance studio, "Therapy Dance," which is located at Yana Urco 4-32 y Rio Upano, phone 09 731 6603. Every taxi driver in town should know
where Yana Urco is, but, if not it is at the bottom of the valley of
Guapdondélig, by the cemetery, South of the airport. Rio Upano is the third
cross street from Guapdondélig. The studio is on the right, just before you get
to the park on the left. It shares a building with the Multi Videos store, which
has a lighted sign that can be seen from a long way off.
Both of these signs are in English.
Some maps say "Yanahurco" instead of Yana Urco - but the street signs (that I
have seen) say Yana Urco. Either way, it is pronounced the same..
~~ Sorry, I do not teach Pole Dancing ~~
Instructional goals will be very simple:
Teach you (and--your two-left-footed-spouse) to look like natural dancers.
Maximize your learning time during our lessons and not waste your time.
Concentrate on Social Dance instruction.
Keep you up to date in dance style and technique.
Encourage you to attend the weekly social dance.
The price for this dance is... FREE! If you are so inclined, please donate $2 per person, to help pay the rent.
The night starts off with a beginner dance lesson from 7:00 - 7:30pm
The cost of the lesson is also free
There is a different lesson taught each week and you can email me, if you need additional information.
After the lesson I
will DJ some great dance music that suits a good mix of dance styles.
Ballroom Music includes:
Foxtrot, Slow Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz
Latin Music Includes:
Cha Cha, Salsa or Mambo, Rumba, Meringue
Swing Music includes:
West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, Hustle
Country-Western Music Includes:
2 Step, Night Club Two (NC2), Triple Two Step, Maybe Polka
The dance continues until 9:30 pm or later if there are enough willing dancers.
Wear comfortable leather-soled shoes, if you have them. (Sneakers and rubber-soles restrict your movement on the dance floor)
There is no smoking allowed. Trouble makers and those just on the prowl will be asked to leave.
Foul language, bad behavior, and rudeness to other dancers is not permitted.
This is a family oriented fun social dance that is suitable for those under 16 years old.
The age of the dancers range from 20s to 70s with most somewhere in the middle. There are singles and couples, (married and not married) attending.

Will and Walter and Judy started the Two Step Tidewater Virginia group, in Virginia Beach, VA, (No membership or dues EVER) when 4 couples, who were cross-over ballroom and C&W dancers wanted a place to dance - other than the smoke-filled night clubs, with a tiny dance floor overflowing with drunks and/or line dancers. We rented a small dance studio, which was closed (and cheap) on Sunday Nights. When we hit over 90 dancers on the dance floor on Sunday evenings, we were forced to move. We had to move to a larger studio, with more air conditioning capacity. We hosted a social dance each week where couples could dance to Latin (Cha Cha, Rumba, Bolero, Samba, Meringues), Ballroom (Waltz, Foxtrot Quickstep), Swing (East Coast Swing and West Coast Swing and Disco Hustle) and Country-Western music (Cowboy Cha, Two Step, Barn Dance, Night-club Two Step, Cowboy Waltz, Country Polka).
~~ About Will Harper:
A little secret that I learned late in life – The ladies don’t even mind if the gentleman has two-left-feet. They just love it if he will dance. This “realization” came to me, when the best dancer (and one of the most beautiful - http://public.fotki.com/donder2/will-harper-clan/wednesday-september-77.html ) asked ME to dance. At first I (the wallflower, with two left feet) said, “NO! I’m not good enough to dance with YOU.” She changed my mind - and, after discovering the joy of dancing, I eventually went on to win the Virginia State Dance Championship. Here is me and my dancing partner-teacher, accepting the applause http://public.fotki.com/donder2/will-harper-clan/wednesday-september-68.html
When I (Will) got to Cuenca, I looked around for a place to dance - there were plenty - but only if you wanted to do Salsa, Salsa, Salsa, Buchata, SALSA, and SALSA all night. I am starting this Cuenca Ballroom Dance Club dance group (at my own expense) in the hopes that we can repeat the Virginia Beach story... We can assemble a self-sustaining group for me, you, and your children - and for the gringos who follow us.

Country & Western two step and other couple dancing, WCS (of course, you can always do a shag to WCS), Ballroom , Swing dancing, and (most) any other special requests. Music is good dance tempo popular music CDs. Couple dancing includes: Country Two-Step, C&W Cha, C&W Waltz, Night-Club 2-Step, Rumba, Cha Cha, Tango, Foxtrot, Meringue, Salsa, Hustle or Disco, Mambo, West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing, and some partner-line-dances. You can always do a Quickstep to the fast 2 steps. We even have the fun dances like Polka, Barn Dances, and Traveling Cha. If somebody wants it, we'll do it...
This is the only place in the entire Cuenca Ecuador area to have fun partner dancing without having to peer through smoke-filled rooms, or put up with the typical bar room or discotec environment. Just good, clean fun with C&W dancing, Ballroom Dancing, and willing dancing partners. I will be your host, and I am are NOT a professional, I am just a great dancer who wanted to do something for the dance scene in Cuenca Ecuador, by creating an atmosphere where C&W, Ballroom, Swing-dancers, West Coast Swing dancers, and even Shag Dancers could get together and enjoy a great mix of dancing fun.
The studio has a large, tiled dance floor (sorry, no hardwood dance floors in
Cuenca). It is a very clean, well maintained studio. The dance studio staff has been very supportive and
I will make
everyone feel welcome. We have been assured that we can have Sunday night
without interruption throughout the year.
I hope that everyone who has enjoyed the social dance on Sunday will continue to
attend. We will do everything we can to make this as smooth as
possible.
The studio is clean and comfortable with good acoustics and a smoke
free ballroom. We start out with a beginner lesson at 7pm. The lesson is on a
different dance each week and lasts for 1/2 hour. Each
month, I pick a different dance and teach it all month. The dancers who attend
are friendly and try to make newcomers welcome. I provide some nice snacks,
munchies and drink FREE. We also may
put out some chips & dip, cookies, sodas, etc. I use only popular
music and rotate the play list each week. As an amateur dancer I'll do my
best to make everyone comfortable and enjoy the night out.
The Cuenca Ballroom Dance Club is a healthy, kid-friendly dancing environment for dancing kids. Many young people start dancing in their pre-teen or teen years. You may bring your children to the Cuenca Ballroom Dance Club events to dance. (To dance, I DON'T do babysitting.) It is virtually impossible to find an environment which is conducive to introducing your youthful dancers to dancing in a social environment. At the Cuenca Ballroom Dance Club, kids will get asked to dance, as often as the adults. For more information, and to see some world champion Country and Western teen and preteen dancers' photographs, take a look at some of the adolescent dancers, teen-age dancers, and pre-teen dancers' pictures at this UTube clip of young people in dancing competions
